As I said in my last post —you can read it here— I deactivated my Instagram account last week. Not only that, but I have also locked myself out of my TikTok account —in an act of desperation, I changed my password to random letters and symbols that I know I won’t remember. And yes, it is as horrible as it sounds. It is an addiction to the max.

I kept other forms of social media, though. I kept WhatsApp, YouTube, Pinterest, Tumblr, and I sometimes open Twitter —I refuse to ever call it X and I am not sorry, Mr. Musk— when I feel that itch that only an algorithm would be able to scratch.

My main goal starting this experiment was clear, and quite easy —right now, the only thing I want to do is exchange short-form content for long-form content. No more doomscrolling on TikTok, no more watching pointless reels that try to psychoanalyze me, no more looking for digital validation from people I haven’t seen in ages.

it’s time to break the cycle

I am glad to say that, in the short span of a week, most of these things have already worked. So here is the list of things I have realized during my first week without these apps:
